PAARC Formed to Defeat Calvert Cliffs Unit 3 on the Chesapeake Bay

After local organizations failed to appeal the State’s approval of an
application for a 1710 MW experimental EPR reactor at Calvert Cliffs
to be built by Unistar – a partnership between Constellation Energy
and
EDF (84% owned by the French state), concerned citizens from northern
to southern Maryland quickly organized and formed PAARC – People
Against A Radioactive Chesapeake.

PAARC is greatly concerned with Plutonium fuel use, high rates of
cancers surrounding Calvert Cliffs 1 & 2, thermal and radioactive
discharges into the Chesapeake Bay, and an additional 23 billion
gallons of surface water to be withdrawn annually from the Bay.
Roughly a quarter of the Chesapeake’s waters fall within the “dead
zone,” with a full forty percent (40%) experiencing
oxygen-deprivation,* in part due to eleven (11) nuclear reactors that
currently dump into the Bay.

Determined to face these challenges head on, PAARC is both excited and
honored to have been accepted as a BREDL Chapter Member!
